At exactly 25 weeks old, my Plymouth Rock hens have already started laying in their secure backyard coop. They are producing beautiful, medium-brown eggs with firm shells every 24 to 26 hours, averaging 5 to 6 eggs per week per hen. Their combs and wattles are bright red, and they are active, healthy, and eating a high-quality layer feed with oyster shells. Despite being in captivity, they are stress-free and well-bedded, which has encouraged steady production far earlier than some commercial flocks. If you are looking for proof that backyard-raised Plymouth Rocks can be reliable layers by 6 months old, my birds are living evidence.
